Marion’s Polio Story
by Marion Wragg ~ contracted polio at age 3 weeks
I was diagnosed with polio at the age of 3 weeks old. My parents were told that I would never walk. At 15 months I shocked everyone when I took my first step. At 2 yrs old, I was fitted with a caliper on my right leg and surgical shoes. I have two children from my first marriage. Today I can only wear boots as my ankle is too weak for shoes.
I have always been independent and managed to keep up with most things. Sadly over the last 10 to 12 years I could tell that things were getting harder to do and that my legs were getting weaker. Now at the age of 63 years I have to use walking aids, I fall often and live with pain, but try not to complain as I always feel there are people worse than me. In October 2012 my second husband of 22 years passed away, it has been a great challenge for me to manage without him. My body is getting weaker and I don’t know what the years ahead hold for me, but I can say one thing, that I’ll never give in. Life is a challenge for most people, but for the ones of us who had polio, it’s just that bit harder.
