Diana’s Story
by Diana Paino ~ contracted polio at age 2
I contracted Polio in 1952, when I was two years old. I remember wearing a half brace on my right leg and noticing people staring at it. I do remember when I was told that I didn’t need to wear it any more – I asked my mother why people were still staring at my foot. I didn’t realise at that time that I walked with a limp – due to my right foot dropping quite substantially. From that time on, 10 years of age, I had to get used to constant staring. This is what hurt me most during my entire life.
I did go on to have a great life, married, had 3 lovely children. During my 40’s I noticed my right leg was getting weaker. I was unable to cope with my drop foot anymore. I then went into a plastic orthotic, which went from under the knee down the leg and into the shoe. I found this really wonderful. Since that time I am now in a brace which goes up the front of the leg – being unable to walk well in my plastic brace. However, the main problem that I have now is that when I need a new brace, I have to wait over a year to actually acquire it. While waiting for the new brace, my right hip moves up and pushes my left hip down. This gives me pain in my back, hip and to a lesser degree in my left knee. I do really hope that the time that it takes to acquire the new orthotic will be able to be shortened considerably. (My marvellous chiropractor is certainly helpful at these times, and prayer has been a wonderful help). Thank you.
