by Kimbalee Apps ~ contracted polio at age 2
I was in my late 20’s when I noticed I was experiencing a lot more pain, especially in the shoulders and hips. I had always had knee pain due to my many operations. I was always very mindful about polio and read a lot of articles about the disease. I then rang Post-Polio NSW and asked if they knew of any good neurologists who specialised in Guillain-Barre Syndrome or polio. They kindly suggested a Professor at Concord Hospital. He contacted a neurologist from Prince of Wales who actually treated me in 1972 and arranged for us to meet and go over my records. Both doctors agreed that I actually had polio and not Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Apparently, my muscles and joints are that of a woman in her 70’s (and I’m only in my early 40’s). I may be old and withered on the inside but I’m as fresh as a daisy on the outside.
