I am Lucky to Walk
by Dalia Boghdadi ~ contracted polio at age 2
I had polio in 1954 at the age of 2 in both legs – it was in Suez, Egypt. My sister who was 11 years old wanted to go to the club and Mum, her and me were waiting for the bus and a neighbour was passing with his car and offered to take us to the club. Mum found out the next day he contracted polio (he was young and a sportsman) and then it was my turn – I had a fever 40 degrees and was hallucinating. My parents had to leave Suez to go to Cairo where the doctors wanted to put me in a iron lung and Mum didn’t want to, but fortunately the polio stopped at my waist. I was paralyzed for 2 years and Mum kept looking after me doing exercises with my legs in hot water every day until my right leg began to move. I am 61 years old and found it difficult to climb stairs or walk in uneven terrain since 4 years now. I had several falls. Now I am doing some physiotherapy at Epworth in Camberwell, Victoria, to build up some muscles in my left leg.
